Dress up for Grown Ups...

I am obsessed. H&M is my store of choice and after visiting their online site I am more in love than ever! They have the usual sections for ladies, mens and kids but what got me was their extraordinary "Dressing-room" section...

As a kid I played dress up with my moms clothes ( don't we all ) and H&M caters to that nostalgic feeling, but in a grown up way. On their site you can dress up a model in their clothes, accessories, jackets, handbags, etc! you can change the way the clothes hang (open jacket, closed jacket, tucked in shirt, not tucked in...well you get the point) and change your models hairstyle. Its all H&Ms new collection, not only do you get to "try on" their clothes without even stepping into the store but it also lists the price of each item and what your total would be for the complete outfit! Genius! and I thought I was addicted to Pinterest...

This was my Casual look creation :

Shoes - $19.95
&Denim Jeans - $39.95
Top - $49.95
Necklace - $19.95
Handbag - $29.95

Total: $159.75

obsessed..

LOVE  LOVE  LOVE. there is no other way to explain it. This look combines ..well  two of my favorites accessories of the season and I myself have not tried it! Now I don`t think I would wear these together but they add a unique element to more simplistic outfits, but if your all about the trends, follow ZARAs example like in our first photo.

1. The Sequin Gold or Rose Gold Clutch

This Outfit is flawless. The Navy Blazer, the Knit underneath, the AMAZING sequin clutch and subtle gold watch. Now what I like about this and why I think the watch still works with the bling of the clutch is that it only has a gold face, the band takes away from the flash and just adds more of an androgynous look (which I love!) The Clutch a la Femme and Watch a la Homme.  Zara knows how to do it.

For Full on Gold watch add other gold bracelets or bangles ( I love the gold chain) or (here comes my favorite way) add another gold watch!! I have seen this done and I think its great, if your adventurous its a great way to be different and fashion forward (maybe that many clocks are the key). Adding different sizes of watches will help keeping it looking modern and chic.

she was a suicide blonde, dyed by her own hands...

To drugstore box dye, or not to.... it is the question... and many women actually don't know the answer or the effects it can really have on their hair and how it may cause you a frustration later down the road.

Now as a stylist in training you make think I am being a little bias but I have seen first hand some pretty ugly things that can happen after using a box dye on your hair, some never show negative results, but is it worth the risk?

Now the thing about hair dye from a box, especially in mens hair dye, is a nasty thing called metallic salts.
Now this will cause your hair if your not careful when you do any sort of chemical treatment will fry your hair from the inside out! It leaves a deposit on your hair, that if you go to get it professionally dyed or corrected, the results can be uneven or turn out pretty bad. In one case I have seen a girl who had boxed dyed her hair a light brown and wanted to go back to her blonde she had previous, deciding she didn't want to try bleaching from a box she came in to the salon, she did't tell the stylist or rather lied and said she had never used a box dye and that lie was soon revealed. Once the lightener had been placed on the hair, most of it lightened to the perfect blonde, and other places where the metallic salts deposits turned pink.

Now this won't always happen but it is a strong chance it will, this was only a minor injury compared to what can happen, you really have no control, nor does your stylist when it comes to coloring hair with metallic salts deposits. The best thing to do if you have used a box dye and are looking to get a professional color, try washing your hair for 1-2 weeks with a cleansing shampoo, this will help strip the color and deposits, although you may not be able to clear it all it may help, but remember to condition as cleansing shampoos can be harsh.

if your thinking "but Liv, I don't have the money to get my hair done at a salon" Well my suggestion would be to look up your nearest beauty or hair school, often students are supervised by their teachers and the prices are almost the same as a box of dye, and you will get a stylist who has a fresh zest for hairdressing and one that will try their best to achieve what you want.

hate it or love it?

There is a new trend arising, it started with the ombre effect, which lead to multi-color ombre ( thanks Katy Perry), then to pastel ombre, and now the trend has gone to full fledged foils. The pastel colors are suttle but give just enough color that it shows some personality. I personally LOVE it. How about you? are you on board for this trend, or hoping this ship sails sooner then later?

Quick Tip

Heres another quick tip for ya!

With a dip in degrees and winter weather heading our way, your hair, well is feeling a little more "electrified" than usual. I personally can not stand static hair in the wintry months and here is an amazing little tip I found that works! and leaves your purse smelling fresh? DRYER SHEETS.
They get the static cling out of your clothes and your tresses! I always keep a few in my purse to swipe on my hair if I am having one of those days! no damage, no residue and makes your hair smell good!

Splurge

Smash Box has an amazing Jet Set waterproof eyeliner, its a little pricey at 22$ for a little thing but man does it do its job!

This line dries smudge proof and takes a minute to dry! My painted on liquid liner days have begun to fade this little guy in my makeup bag.  It also comes in a few different colors, like teal! Using an arced brush you can line your lids any way you want to your desired look.

sound of sunshine...

Found a new summer makeup look I am loving on www.ellecanada.com, it natural with a tangerine twist!
Here is a how to from their site! Enjoy!

                                           Orange-Lips.jpg

Orange lips

Seen at: Jil Stuart & Twenty8Twelve

Wearing a high voltage lip colour like tangerine and persimmon can be daunting, that’s why we connected withGivenchy’s National Training Manager, Mylène Fillion to lay out the ground rules for getting the perfect orange pout.

Step 1: To help the lipstick appear more smooth and even, Fillion says, “The first step is to apply a small amount of luminous foundation on the lips as a base. Then, slightly powder your lips with a translucent powder” (Fillion suggests Armani mico-fil Loose Powder ($49).

Step 2: Using a lip brush for a more controlled application, apply the lipstick from the middle of the upper lip towards the ends. Do same thing for the bottom lip.

Step 3: To achieve a more clean and polished look, Fillion recommends using a lip liner around the edge of your lips. It is essential to use a lipstick that is moisturizing and high in pigment to maximize the length of wear.

Tip: Not all skin tones can handle a neon orange pout as it really depends on your individual colouring. Try playing around with shades of coral or peach, which are flattering on most skin tones, for an equally fresh summery look.

straighten it curly...

Well this is something new I have just learned how to do! Curl your hair with a flat iron! and I am obsessed! Now the girl in this video is a little more rockstar and likes that look but you can wear it sleek too!
Now key things to remember when doing this technique:

  • If  you have fine hair or processed (lightened, bleached, whatever you want to call it), don't go too slowly or you will fry your hair!
  • Don't go back over hot hair wait for it to cool if you messed up on a curl
  • It will take Practice so don't flip out if it doesn't work the first time!

obsessed..

In August I will be going to NYC for a East Coast Cruise and I am so excited! I love the City and Have never been on a cruise and so I am overjoyed, not only that but for the Formal Nights hosted aboard most cruise lines, which means DRESSES! As of late I am obsessed with drawing inspiration from some old hollywood and who better then Audrey Hepburn.

As she was also Hubert de Givenchy's muse after their first collaboration for her movie Sabrina (her 2nd big film), she is also my fashion muse of the moment!

I will post pictures of the dresses I find,
None will compare to this but timeless is my key word!!

Honor the sun..

H&M Finally have their website for Canada up and running, now I have not checked in awhile but a reliable source mentioned to me today that they have a look book website up and running! Now on Twitter today H&M tweeted " Online shopping will be available in the US in the beginning of 2012, stay tuned! ". So Canada must not be too far behind that!

Oh and I am just living for this dress I found on the site today! love it? hate it?

Burberry may have the cutest trenches and I love the popular scents from the Brit label but their BURBERRY BRIGHTS EYEWEAR SS/2011 COLLECTION is something to drool over!

The many colors (bright and pastel)against the grey scheme of their ad with their iconic coats makes me want to hop on a plane to the coast of Britain just to live out the chic-ness that is Burberry.

Im keeping my eye out for some cheap look alikes, have you seen any?

fresh out of water...

Heres a fun and easy summer look!

I love this look! The dewy skin, light flush, and hint of blue makes it fun, fresh and flirty! and its super easy to do! If you look back at the fresh faced tutorial you can follow that first of just apply moisturizer (with an SPF) to your skin if you don't wear foundation.

Now From there you want to curl your eyelashes and apply your mascara, water proof on humid days is best. With a warm pink or peach blush apply to cheeks in the amount you want flushed, apples of your cheeks for a doll-like-look or emphasize your cheek bones too.

For your eyes just add some white liner to the inner rim of your bottom last (see bright eye tutorial) anf then just add as little or much blue/turquoise liner to the outside of your eye in a cat-eye effect. This look looks better without the blue eyeliner winged but if you like it dramatic you can add it for some spice.

Add a light pink or nude gloss and you look like a goddess who has spent her day basking in the sun and like your  lovely glow is au natural! xo

summer days slippin away...

.as weather sort of gets warmer, and lets hope it gets A LOT warmer very soon, I am dying to bring out the cute sunny clothes! Here are some of my essentials this summer: black shorts, white or beige trench coat, long black blazer, nude heeled sandal, LWD (little white dress), loose fitting tank tops, silky skirts, and retro sunglasses!

Quick Tip

Well in the past I put up another "Quick Tip" about washing your face and how hot and cold water affects the pores in your face ( you can go back and read past Quick Tips to refresh your memory) and the same rules apply to your hair, instead of pores, its cuticles.

When washing your hair you should always shampoo first and condition second, most people know this but what they don't know is the temperature to use. When shampooing it is good to have the water warm to hot because it opens up the cuticles in your hair allowing all the dirt to be washed out although just leaving it like that will leave it dry and frizzy, so next you condition.

Now when you condition use COLD water because the cold water will close up the cuticle allowing the hair to absorb and keep the moisture in your hair.

modern day grace..

Well I am tired from staying up ALL night but it was well worth watching THE ROYAL WEDDING! It was a beautiful historic event with lots of tradition, hats and obvious true love in that church! William was looking daper in his uniform, but Kate truly stole the Show! She looked Royal, Sophisticated, Timeless, Elegant, and best of all: Her Self in the Alexander MacQueen stunner (designed by Sarah Burton of the MacQueen Hause). She did not try to be Diana or show her up, she went with her natural style and even did her own makeup! Congrats to the royal Couple! It was beautiful, best of luck on your journey ahead.
God save the Queen. xo
